Dear God,
I still can't believe how wonderful our trip to Haiti was. My faith has grown and my spirit has been
renewed. We went to give the children of Haiti Christmas shoeboxes - but instead I received the
best Christmas present I could have ever asked for. I received a heart on fire again for you, Lord.
It wasn't just the children's smiles and occasional stroking of my blonde hair. It wasn't just seeing
the meager conditions in which they live. It wasn't (definitely) the bumpy roads we traveled or the
wonderful Pastors we met or the amazing cook/housekeeper that cared for us or the team that I
now feel like are family.
No, it was something much more. It was the fact that You, Lord, went ahead of us. You prepared
the way and guided us as we rested when we thought we should be working, and when we were
stretched to treat about fifty people who needed medical help - underneath a shade tree by a
dusty road in the hot sun. We realized each day that whatever you had for us to do - we would
do. Admittedly, we did rest a little more than we worked - but even in our rest, You drew us
closer to You.
The time we spent traveling, laughing, praying, eating, sleeping and playing together - drew us
close to each other - and closer to You. We were blessed to be a part of one of our Christian
brothers' baptisms in the Caribbean and celebrated afterwards by playing in the sea.
Maybe next time we go (and yes, I did say next time...) You'll have different plans for us. We may
work harder and rest less. But we'll never trade the memories of the Sunday morning worship
with believers praising God in a language we couldn't understand - and yet we could, with making
friends through hugs and smiles where words wouldn't do and realizing our lives would never be
the same again.
Thank you, God, for blessing each of our lives with this awesome experience.
Jan Nelson
