Family and Friends of GVCM,
Below is a note I received today from Jan. She shares what is happening in Haiti after the earthquake. I will continue to update you as news become available from the field.
Blessings,
Tyler Wright
We arrived in Port Au Prince this morning from Mirabelles and found driving over the mountain to be very good. There were some minor rock slides but, most rubble had been cleared. As we entered the city we found people everywhere on the streets with no place to go and no businesses are open. Several buildings have collapsed down upon themselves. The bridge we crossed has server cracks and although vehicles are still using it the people are running across it in fear of it collapsing. The hospitals are full of the injured, churches and schools are demolished. Whole neighborhoods are destroyed. Most multilevel buildings between Delmas and Petion-ville have been flattened. There is no electricity, no water, no phone communication within this entire region and we have heard some
reports about American Airlines canceling flights. There is still satellite so thankfully we have some opportunity for contact with the outside. It appears that no clean up efforts have begun and Haiti does not have any earth moving or heavy equipment to move the rubble. The GVCM office in Belle-ville does not appear to have any damage and I am writing this to you using power from car batteries.
The orphanage in Fedja sustained no damage but surrounding homes were severely damaged and proprietary walls have fallen over everywhere. The building where the orphans were living temporarily has a crack but, praise God because remodeling has just begun it is currently vacant. The plan for this building is to use it as a school and home for the deaf children. There is a team from Minnesota on its second week and a team from Iowa that just arrived yesterday before the quake. One team member was on the skidster and he talked about how it was rocking on two wheels from side to side and he said the retaining wall directly in front of his vision was just like a wave on the ocean.
